About
I am currently co-directing a multi-year, interdisciplinary research project on the coast of Newfoundland to examine the transformation of traditional economies of various cultures (prehistoric through historic). This includes archaeological excavation at sites along the southeastern coast of Newfoundland and extensive systematic survey of the region; environmental research to obtain proxy data to reconstruct past climatic, ecological, and geological conditions; and ethnohistoric research focusing on contact between groups, post-contact relationships and adaptations, and their correlation to environmental change and demographic shifts.
I also hold an NSF grant as a Research Associate at the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology at Brown to investigate the origins of whaling in the Bering Strait region. The focus of this research has shifted towards a closer examination of the Old Whaling site, Cape Krusenstern, Alaska using geophysical techniques and finer resolution lithic analyses of extant collections made by J. Louis Giddings and Doug Anderson.
I also continue to collaborate with researchers on the Northern Channel Islands of California and the interior of Iceland examining interaction between humans and their environment.
Currently examining research opportunities in the Champlain Valley Region of NY and Vermont.
